Personal Animation school work from Media Design School, Auckland, NZ.
Animated in Maya 2014.
Rig credit to Roger Feron.

Wolf walk cycle we completed on our first week back to school, first formative of the 5 week creature component. Took about 3/4 days to complete this one. I'm pretty happy with the result though I'll look to make a few changes here and there and polish it a bit more. Any feedback is welcome, I'd like to have this piece perfect before putting it in a showreel. Any comments will be appreciated :)

Love the animation! Where can I get this rig? I understand your tutor made it? Is it uploaded anywhere for public or personal use? I have the same assignment and really would like to use this. Cheers!

It's an Ambient Occlusion render from within Maya, just tweaked the AO render preset that comes in Maya already. I exported two renders, three quarters front/back view and then comped them together in After Efects. This explanation may sound technical, but it's actually quite a simple set-up to achieve :)

Thanks for the compliment ! Yup for class we have the rig provided to us, rig credited to our tutor Roger Feron. Although most in my class could potentially rig a wolf like this (I could as long as I reviewed my notes from last year :-p), we are in the animation stream to focus solely on animating. They provide the rig to us, so we have the maximum amount of time in a given week to get to animating aye. Cheers.

Cheers, definitely my goal was to make it look very natural and for it to have a physical presence. I enjoy doing cartoon animation mostly, so it was interesting to have a go at doing something way more realistic. Glad you liked it :)

@00:08Compliments appreciated :D ! More than happy to inspire a fellow will-be animator. Although its hard to say, this particular one took maybe 3 days or about 18 hours from scratch to polishing. However, I worked on a wolf walk cycle earlier in the week and it was absolutely rubbish and I made many mistakes, so I started again. This is the second one so it went by faster, and like they say, you always do it faster and better the second time :-p . Cheers :)

Hmmmmmm...definitely fav'ed. For me best played at speeds 0.125X (slow mo), and then faster speed at 2.000X. The motion is fantastic, can't find any faults with it. Just wondering if wolves hold their tail down like that when walking, I'll have to look in real life(?).  Do you know if this Roger Feron has any plans to release his quad rig to the general public? There is a SERIOUSLY deficient source online for quadruped rigs for people, especially ones that don't have to be confined to using them on Maya or the other 4 major modeling/rigging/animation software. I have been looking for a very long time for a quad rig and that is a major stumbling block for me and prolly other animation amateurs.

Glad you liked it :) I definitely don't think you'll see a public version of the this rig, Roger is a tutor at school and the creature and character rigs he makes are made to be exclusively for MDS students. Although I haven't looked around much for quadruped rigs, I agree that there doesn't seem to be many good ones online. I guess you've already stumbled upon it, but the Nico rig seems to be a popular one. Although the rig looks quite intense to me (a few to many controls that could possibly be simplified), I'm sure you can get some decent animation out of it.  The only other one I know is the Balto rig, and I haven't used that rig before either. Good luck either way buddy :)

can I ask what program(s) are used for this? I'm super interested in 3d animation and I'm curious as to what programs are used when creating animation. Don't worry though, I won't be buying anything without taking a course first! ^^

My school tutor Roger Feron modelled and rigged the wolf, all in Maya I believe. We got the to use the rig as part of our creature animation component, and we use solely Autodesk Maya 2014 for the animation, all done by hand. I rendered it Maya also, and then took it into Adobe after effects just two comp the wolfs together and also add a nice gradient to the background. There are a variety of animation programs, but us animators at school only use Maya. Thanks for asking :)

You're welcome :) I feel like the tiny tweaks you put in at the end of an animation are really what brings it to life.
